Manchester advanced course in liaison psychiatry

This course is organised by Professor Else Guthrie and Professor Francis Creed. It is an intensive week long course in liaison psychiatry and is most suitable for newly appointed Consultants and SpRs. It is of interest for trainee psychiatrists who want to pursue a career in liaison psychiatry or wish to expand their knowledge of this area. Emphasis is placed upon small group teaching and workshops.

   Clinical issues covered include: "somatisation", "psychological reactions to physical illness", "medico-legal aspects of liaison psychiatry", "psychological treatment of somatisation" and "drug treatments in liaison psychiatry". Managerial and administrative issues are also covered, as are research and audit. The course runs every year in June in Manchester. It has now been running for several years, and the feedback from participants has always been extremely positive.

Manchester course on Psychodynamic-Interpersonal Therapy

Course Organiser: Professor Else Guthrie, Professor of Psychological Medicine & Medical Psychotherapy

This is an intensive five-day course, which will be held at the Research & Education Centre, Rawnsley Building, Manchester Royal Infirmary. 

The aims of the course are as follows:

- To provide a brief theoretical introduction to the model.
- To acquaint participants with the main features of the model.
- To enable participants to work using the model with patients with:
Somatisation, depression, deliberate self-harm and complex chronic conditions.

The course is suitable for individuals who have previous experience of a psychotherapy or counselling training.  The course will not cover the basic principles of psychotherapy but will focus upon specific aspects of psychodynamic interpersonal therapy.

Participants will receive a copy of a psychotherapy manual and adherence scale plus a booklet with a compilation of papers that have been published on the model.
